It’s Friday, the world is doomed.

It is a Friday morning. I am sitting in my apartment knowing that I do not have to go into work today. Surprisingly, I AM wearing pants. I have already consumed an entire pot of coffee. I am currently listening to Modest Mouse. Life would seem to be on the level today.

So, why is it that I am in a complete and total state of “Holy fuck, the world is doomed!” this morning? Well, I made the mistake of reading several newspapers and websites. Seriously, what the fuck world? From Canadians being stupidly racist to the Pussy Riot verdict. Not to mention how fucked up Russia banning Gay Pride for a CENTURY is. If that wasn’t enough, South African police opened fire on protesting miners.

If I believed in hell, I’d say we were headed there in some sort of handbasket. Come on, world, we can get through this. We can be better! We can be smarter! We can care about shit outside of our own Friday night plans. Can’t we?

Of course, history seems to tell me we can’t. Maybe we are just fucked. So, fuck it. It’s Friday! We’ll start being better on Monday.

Tony Sly (1970 – 2012)

No Use for a Name wasn’t just a band to me. They were MY band. I felt connected to them. When I was young, I spent hours on their message board connecting with other No Use fans. We were a strange community to say the least, but we were all bonded by our love and passion for the band. Tony Sly might have claimed to not be a saviour but he certainly was ours.

The first time I saw No Use for a Name was in 2000 at the Opera House with Mad Caddies and Consumed. I had been obsessively listening to them for two straight years and I was ready to lose my mind that night. At 16 years old, this was my first “real” concert in the city. Within fifteen seconds of NUFAN taking the stage I had already been knocked to the ground by the mosh pit. A couple people pushed the crowd back and picked me up and I don’t think I left the pit the rest of the night. It was the first time I felt like I belonged somewhere. It was an amazing feeling and it is one I have been chasing ever since. While I may have strayed from NUFAN and no longer listened to them as frequently as I once did, I still throw on “Leche Con Carne”, “Making Friends” and “More Betterness!” when I am feeling nostalgic. No Use for a Name was the start of my musical awakening and I am truly devastated by the loss of Tony Sly.

My deepest condolences go out to Tony’s wife and two daughters. Please know that Tony leaves behind an incredible legacy and a community that will be there for you. Tony touched thousands of lives and we are forever grateful for the gifts he bestowed on us.

Rest in Peace Tony.
